Minister suspends tardy teachers in Vanuatu

1:44 pm on 13 June 2011

Vanuatu's Minister of Education, Marcellino Pipite, has suspended six school teachers for turning up late for work.

The Daily Post Newspaper reports the minister saying his actions show he meant business when he warned teachers earlier this year that they needed to be in class on time.

Mr Pipite says he suspended the teachers after receiving reports from school inspectors that the teachers often arrived late.

He says being absent from class deprives students of their rights to education.

Mr Pipite says the suspended teachers can appeal to the Vanuatu Teaching Service Commission if they're unhappy with his decision.
