Nauru signals readiness to sign refugee convention

7:49 pm on 13 June 2011

The government of Nauru says it's actively considering signing the United Nations Human Rights Convention on Refugees.

This came up during a visit to the island by the Australian Opposition leader, Tony Abbott.

Mr Abbot is pushing for the Australian government to re-open the island's detention camp for asylum seekers.

The Nauru government says there are no issues in it signing the Convention.

Nauru's president, Marcus Stephen, says they're also close to ratifying the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
