Teachers' advocate in Vanuatu says there are valid reasons for lateness

The President of the Vanuatu Teachers Union says six school teachers who have been suspended for being late for work could have valid reasons why.

The teachers, from primary and secondary schools across the country, were suspended by the Minister of Education Marcellino Pipite after he received reports of their tardiness from school inspectors.

The President of the Teachers Union, Wilfred Leo says some teachers commute from outer islands and says public transport can let them down.

"There are reasons behind lateness. Some of them are located way back in remote areas and some of them are located where the flights especially do not go very often."

Wilfred Leo says he is hoping the education minister will give the teachers a chance to explain their failure to be punctual.
