New Caledonia portfolios to be allocated today

New Caledonia's 11-member government is due to meet today to allocate portfolios among the four factions making up the collegial administration.

Last week, the Congress chose Harold Martin as president for the fourth time since March amid unprecedented political instability triggered by an unresolved dispute over which flag the territory should adopt as part of its decolonisation process.

The Caledonia Together Party caused three government collapses in March and April but didn't repeat the move when the election was held last week.

However, it has warned that it will have no choice but to bring down the government again if the allocation of portfolios fails to reflect its standing as the territory's second biggest political force.

Paris is expected to finalise a law change within weeks that will set a stop to serial resignations by granting a new government an 18-month grace period.
