An audit of rural postal services in Fiji has revealed considerable weaknesses in present operations.
The Performance Audit 2008 of Post Fiji Limited by the Auditor General's Office has found that postal services to the rural areas was not profitable.
The Fiji Times newspaper reports the findings show Post Fiji Limited continued to provide services on behalf of the Government.
The audit notes that Post Fiji did not have the standard services for rural postal services and that expenses recorded had significant variances when compared to rural post offices records maintained within the organisation.
The committee also found that there was little or no control over telephone expenses in all the rural post offices, that resulted in the huge telephone bills paid by the Government.
