Another union leader in Fiji is alleged to have been beaten by the country's military.
The ILO representative in Suva, David Lamotte, says the President of the Ba Branch of the Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union is alleged to have been attacked by two military personnel last week.

"The attack comes on the heels of a meeting of the International Labour Organisation in Geneva where Fiji's interim Labour Minister was taken to task on increasing restrictions on unions in Fiji. The ILO's Mr Lamotte says he's been in touch with the union chief Mohammed Khalil, who's alleged to have been attacked on the 22nd of this month. This follows attacks by the military on Fiji Trades Union Congress Felix Anthony in February. Mr Lamotte says Mr Khalil is in shock and has taken a week's sick leave. Mr Lamotte says he's requested meetings with the interim government on the matter and the ILO is now working with its international partners to look at a more comprehensive strategy on how to respond to such issues."
