Fiji court releases on bail Estonian man charged over Mara escape

A magistrate's court in Fiji has released on bail an Estonian man, who is accused of assisting a former senior Fiji military officer, Lieutenant Colonel Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, escape to Tonga last month.

Fijilive reports that Risto Harmat pleaded not guilty to charges of obstructing to defeat the course of justice.

The case has been adjourned until July the 19th.

Col Mara left for Tonga while on bail on a sedition charge.

Fiji has so far failed to win the extradition of Col Mara who has accused the interim regime of serious human rights abuses and asked for police to investigate.
