More talks planned over Air Tahiti Nui strike

Fresh talks are planned in French Polynesia today to end a strike at Air Tahiti Nui.

The indefinite strike by some crew members is in its fourth day and may soon be joined by more airline unions.

Walter Zweifel reports.

"The strike has alarmed the tourism industry but so far it has only led to some flights being delayed. Air Tahiti Nui has chartered an Air New Zealand Boeing 747 to maintain the key Papeete to Los Angeles link but fears that more pilots could join the strike while flight attendants are set to take action this weekend."

The dispute was triggered by the airline sanctioning two Air Tahiti Nui crew for being in a brawl with an American Airlines employee in a Tokyo hotel. A fresh flashpoint has emerged over unions objecting to the hiring of a top executive from outside the territory.
