Fiji pension cuts challenged as implementation looms

6:56 pm on 30 June 2011

Changes to provisions of the Fiji's National Provident Fund are to come into force tomorrow in line with a news decree by the interim regime.

The proposed cuts are being challenged by a lawyer, Dr Shaista Shameem, on behalf of a pensioner.

According to the Fiji Times, she has sought an injunction to halt the reforms.

It is not immediately clear if her action has any bearing on the regime move.

Dr Shameem said her law firm, ShameemLaw, had been contacted by a number of people who wanted to make similar applications and join the action.
