Cooks Tourism adamant destination is safe

The Cook Islands Tourism Corporation wants to assure tourists that Rarotonga still has a very low crime rate and remains an idyllic holiday destination.

This comes after police suggested accommodation operators hire private security guards to combat a spate of burglary and thefts, some targetting tourists.

The corporation's chief executive, Carmel Beattie, says she doesn't want to create alarm following media coverage of police concerns.

But she says people should always use common sense.

"Often it seems people are lulled into a false sense of security. They are in this gorgeous place, they are very relaxed, and they think they can leave all their goods and chattels when they go the beach, or park their bike, which they probably wouldn't do at home."
