Fiji govt considers interest in setting up casino

8:58 pm on 13 July 2011

Fiji's interim Minister of Tourism Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the government's received a variety of applications from parties interested in setting up the country's first casino.

Mr Sayed Khaiyum says the casino needs to be tied in with a convention centre so the country can tap into the unexploited meetings and convention market.

He says applications are being processed but he wouldn't be drawn on when any casino might be up and operating.

"It is a major step to allow a casino to come into Fiji. We have to of course develop the appropriate laws. We want to ensure the right legal framework is there, the right checks and balances are there."
