More inter island transport woes in American Samoa

7:11 pm on 21 July 2011

The US Coast Guard has removed the certificate of inspection for the American Samoa Government vessel, MV Sili, meaning the boat can no longer operate in a commercial capacity.

The new head of the Coast Guard marine safety detachment unit in Pago Pago Lieutenant Steven Caskey, told KHJ News that until the vessel passes a safety inspection it will not be able to leave port.

The inspection covers life saving equipment, emergency lighting, fire fighting apparatus and the crew's response in handling different emergencies.

The Coast Guard official is aware that Manu'a is without any transportation at the moment because air services are also out of action.

Lieutenant Caskey said the Coast Guard is working with the MV Sili to get the vessel back in the water as soon as possible.
