A court decision is due today over a bid by landowners in Papua New Guinea's Madang province to have a permanent injunction placed on a marine disposal system for tailings from a local mine.
The operator of the Ramu nickel mine in Madang, the Chinese Metallurgical Construction Group, plans to dump five million tonnes of slurry waste annually into Basamuk Bay.
The National Court last year ordered a temporary injunction on the nickel mine's previously approved submarine tailings disposal system.
The landowners claim the waste disposal system would devastate the local marine environment.
