American Samoa calls for rethink on end to food vouchers

1:56 pm on 26 July 2011

The American Samoa governor, Togiola Tulafono, has asked the federal government to reconsider its plan to replace 25 dollar food vouchers with cooked food delivered to homes.

Togiola says he raised the matter with federal officials during the Federal Regional Council meeting held in San Francisco earlier this month.

Togiola said senior citizens use every penny of the voucher but if it's replaced by cooked food that means some money will go to whoever's providing the cooked food.

The governor says providing cooked food was the previous policy in American Samoa but it was abandoned because many people didn't like the food provided under the program.

A number of elderly in American Samoa have told our correspondent that they don't want cooked food, because they'd prefer to purchase their own food under the voucher system.
