The benefits of composting toilets is one topic that'll be raised at a regional meeting this week focussing on better water management in the Pacific.
The meeting run by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community with the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Facility, gets underway in the Cook Islands tomorrow.
Many parts of the Pacific have significant issues with water supply and sanitation and the SPC's Mark Wilson says they've noticed that if they provide guidance and project management Pacific communities can get on top of their water issues.
He says composting toilets, funded by the Global Environment Facility, have proven a major success in Tuvalu.
"And those same systems we are now talking about extending into places like Nauru and into the Marshall Islands. So you can see we are learning in one area and now we are trying to extend those into those other areas. Overcoming some of the resistance by having people from Tuvalu themselves go across to these communities and talk about their own experiences, rather than having water experts say this is what you should be doing."
