An influx of local and international visitors are expected in the Cook Islands from today as the annual Te Maeva Nui celebrations begin.

Te Maeva Nui is the Cook Islands' largest cultural festival surrounding Constitution day on August the 4th, which marks the anniversary of its independence from New Zealand.

According to the Cook Islands News, the government is this year allocating an additional 694-thousand US dollars to its Ministry of Cultural development to host the week-long event.

The majority of the funds will be spent on transporting Cook Islanders from outer islands to Rarotonga to participate.
