A conference on West Papua this week is to present what organisers say is the strongest case to date that the people of the Indonesian region have the right to self-determination.
International lawyers, politicians, tribal leaders, a UN committee member and a witness to the 1969 Act of Free Choice will attend the Road To Freedom conference in Oxford, chaired by British MP Andrew Smith.
The exiled Papuan independence leader Benny Wenda, says the attendance of the group, the International Lawyers for West Papua, lends weight to growing scrutiny of the incorporation of his homeland into Indonesia.
"All the legal experts from around the world could come together to look at the legal argument and because the last forty-eight years, we have not had any lawyers. They can look at the case. It's very important for our struggle."
