American Samoa Arts Council encourages use of Samoan language in homes

The Executive Director of the American Samoa Arts Council Leala Pili is encouraging parents to speak Samoan at home to keep it alive.

At the end of the Arts council's annual summer cultural enrichment programme Mrs Pili said she feared the language will be lost if parents don't speak to their children in their native tongue at home.

Mrs. Pili says at the start of the 5 week programme, she noticed that more than 100 participants, ranging in age from 5 to 17, didn't speak or understand Samoan.

"That's the hardest part. Teaching them how to speak Samoan in the campus. We try our best to let them speak Samoan. None of them, none of them speak Samoan. For me, we should teach our kids to speak Samoan. When they go to school they can learn English from school."
