Pacific nations begin to target cyber crime

9:34 am on 3 August 2011

Pacific nations including the Cook Islands are starting to target cyber crime with help from New Zealand and Australia.

Niue has adopted a pilot programme to raise awareness about cyber crime and target offenders, and a similar initiative is soon to be implemented in the Cook Islands.

Police in Niue and the Cook Islands are receiving help from the Australian Federal Police through its Pacific Islands Development Programme.

The assistance enables pilot projects to be implemented, focussing on cyber crime identified as having the most impact on children, youth and other vulnerable members of society.

That includes cyber bullying, online sex offences, cyber predators and grooming by travelling foreign sex offenders.
