Vanuatu opposition says jailed drunken cabinet minister must be sacked

7:22 pm on 5 August 2011

The Vanuatu opposition leader, Serge Vohor, is demanding the prime minister sack the minister of ni- Vanuatu business, who's been jailed after a display of public drunkeness late last month.

Pastor Don Ken was arrested on the eve of Vanuatu's anniversary celebrations.

Mr Vohor says prime minister, Sato Kilman, should sack him while he's still in custody as his behaviour was embarrassing and the government's integrity needs protecting.

Eye witnesses say Pastor Don parked an official car in the middle of the road in Port Vila, disturbing traffic and resisting police.

The arrested minister missed the offical ceremony and the prime minister's independence day speech.
