Cook Islands to get Chinese solar panels

2:16 pm on 8 August 2011

Cook Islanders may soon be receiving electricity through Chinese solar panels funded by the New Zealand aid programme.

The Cook Islands prime minister, Henry Puna, raised this possibility with China's ambassador, Xu Jianguo, during a visit to Rarotonga last week.

Mr Puna says the government's renewable energy proposals are among aid initiatives the New Zealand and Chinese governments can both be involved in.

He says Chinese solar panels are amongst the most advanced in the world.

Such collaboration follows a summit involing both countries earlier this year.
