Cooks police no closer to catching Aitutaki bank thief or loot

12:45 pm on 15 August 2011

The Cook Islands police are no closer to finding a large amount of cash stolen from an Aitutaki bank, or those responsible.

The branch of the Bank of the Cook Islands on Aitutaki was burgled last week.

The police commissioner, Maara Tetava, won't confirm rumours that more than 16-and-a-half thousand US dollars are missing.

Police are seeking someone seen looking into the bank on the night of the theft and are asking the Aitutaki community to be on alert for anyone behaving suspiciously, such as spending more than usual or talking suspiciously about the crime.

It's the first time police can recall a bank burglary of this kind in the Cook Islands.
