Delay in settling New Caledonia's domestic transport woes

2:27 pm on 16 August 2011

There has been a delay in New Caledonia where a deal was to be signed today to end the dispute over air fare increases to the Loyalty Islands.

The issue led to prolonged airport occupations and fatal clashes on Mare which claimed four lives.

According to public radio, a meeting in Lifou will still go ahead and involve representatives of the territorial government and the mediators.

However, there will no representatives of the groups involved in the protests on Mare and the Isle of Pines, with reports citing logistical problems as reason for their absence.

The agreement expected to be signed is to address transport concerns not only in the aviation sector but also in the maritime sector.
