Sport: Bill to help American Samoa's Pacific Games team gains Senate support

11:17 am on 17 August 2011

A bill to provide 100,000 US dollars to help send American Samoa's athletes to the New Caledonia Games yesterday passed its third reading in the Senate.

Sponsored by Senator Velega Savali, the bill provides that the funding for the measure would come from dividends from the government's interests in the American Samoa Hawaii Cable for fiscal year 2009 and 2010.

If such funding is not available, then the source of funding would come from the ASG Insurance Proceeds Account.

The measure now goes to the House for their review.

American Samoa is sending a contingent of 167 to the games in Noumea.
