Money for unpaid Vanuatu teachers goes to cyclone relief

10:40 am on 19 August 2011

Vanuatu's Minister of Education says money for scholarship students and cyclone relief work in Tafea province takes priority over unpaid teacher salaries at an extra-ordinary session of parliament tomorrow.

Marcellino Pepite says a supplementary education budget of two and a quarter million US dollars will be tabled.

But says the unpaid teacher salaries, totalling three million US dollars, aren't included.

He says unpaid teachers are still getting a minimum allowance paid out in the interim to help out with living costs.

"What is urgent is student allowance for scholarship and Tafea relief. And further the Minister of Finance has promised me for the next extra sitting to approve my teachers salary."
