Visitor numbers to the Cook Islands this July are up almost 13 percent on last year.

More than 13,400 people visited the Cook Islands last month, according to the country's statistics office.

July is the busiest tourist monuth, and tourism chief executive Carmel Beattie says the figures are particularly exciting because the numbers for last July were also a significant increase on those in 2009.

New Zealanders continue to be the country's most frequent visitors.

Last month almost 10,000 Kiwis flew into Rarotonga.
