The host country of four years ago is expecting more intense competition when the 14th edition of the Pacific Games starts this weekend in New Caledonia.

The secretary general at the Samoa Association of Sport and National Olympic Committee, Aveau Niko Palamo, says with funding tied to performance the calibre of action should go up another level in New Caledonia.

"Most Pacific countries are using sport as a promotion tool in order to get more funding. And to get the recognition you need from the sponsors and the donors you need to do well in the arena of international sport. And this is one arena we need to do well in."
