French Polynesia's ruling party says the opposition is too late to challenge the government's decolonisation bid.
The opposition has decided to seek a court order to annul last week's assembly resolution which asks France to re-inscribe French Polynesia on the UN decolonisation list.
It says there were formal flaws when the vote was held.
But the government says its attempt to get the support of next month's Pacific Islands Forum summit is not tied to the assembly vote as the body was lobbied earlier, adding that the matter will be raised in Auckland.
In a statement, it says even those New Caledonians initially opposed to any UN involvement in the territory's relations now welcome it.
The statement questions where French Polynesia is at after 30 years of autonomy and with all the money from the French nuclear weapons tests.
