UN secretary general to visit Solomon Islands and Kiribati

11:57 am on 25 August 2011

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will visit Solomon Islands and Kiribati next week ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum in Auckland.

In Honiara, Mr Ban will meet key political leaders and the Special coordinator of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.

Mr Ban will be accompanied by about 20 senior officials and media personnel.

The Solomon Islands government says Mr Ban is to see the resilience of the country in managing itself during natural disasters and also to get a feel of life in the country.

It will be only the second visit to the South Pacific by a UN Chief.
