Aitutaki mayor pitches produce to Cook Islanders in NZ

The mayor of Aitutaki is calling on Cook Islanders living in New Zeland to support the island's economy by buying its frozen produce.

A container of Aitutaki maniota, taro, puraka and grated uto is on its way to Auckland - just the second shipment of frozen produce from Aitutaki to New Zealand in six years.

Mayor John Baxter says he hopes the island will net over 33,000 US dollars from the more than 800 bags of frozen produce.

Mr Baxter says he has a clear message for Cook Islanders living in New Zealand.

"I think you people can have a treat by purchasing the produce and also you are doing a big favour for the growers and the people of Aitutaki."

John Baxter says Aitutaki's agriculture project team, headed by Tuao Messine, aims to have a container full of local produce on every monthly voyage to New Zealand.
