American Samoa's governor Togiola Tulafono, who's been a spectator at the first week of the Pacific Games in New Caledonia, travels to Auckland this weekend for next week's Pacific Islands Forum summit.

The US State Department has invited the governor to be part of the US delegation to the meeting at which the US will formally ask for observer status for the US Pacific territories of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas and American Samoa.

Togiola and a team of senior officials will also attend the Pacific Islands Trade and Investment Summit.

The summit has been advertised as an unparalleled opportunity to gain practical insights into what's on offer across the region.
