Plans in pipeline to market Cook Islands-branded tin fish

The Cook Islands Ministry of Marine Resources is targeting European Union members to open up their markets for its canned fish.

The Ministry is hoping it can put its own label on tinned fish caught within its Exclusive Economic Zone and processed in American Samoa and Papua New Guinea.

The Secretary of Marine Resources, Ben Ponia, says the ministry is in its early days of developing markets for canned fish.

"Part of our plan is actually to have some of that product returned back to the Cook Islands, if possible. We'd like to be eating our own fish. There's a nice turn to that being possible. But the most lucrative opportunity is probably in the EU market."

Ben Ponia says the Ministry is also hoping to market its canned fish in Australia and New Zealand.
