5:17 am on 5 September 2011

The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, says the planet cannot wait for a new, greener future ,and warns of economic and social instability in the Pacific if nothing is done to combat climate change.

Speaking in Solomon Islands where he met the prime minister, Danny Philip, Mr Ban says he is ready to sound alarm bells to the whole world over the dangers of climate change.

He says for the Solomons to have lasting stability, there is a need to protect human rights and uphold the law.

Mr Ban says the status of women needs to be raised and it is important to stop violence against women.

No woman has been elected to the Solomons parliament since the late 1990s.

The UN secretary-general will visit Kiribati before flying to the Forum in Auckland.
