UN chief sees impact of climate change in Pacific

3:28 pm on 7 September 2011

The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, says his recent visit to the Pacific has given him a much keener sense of the challenges of climate change.

Mr Ban is in Auckland attending the Pacific Islands Forum in Auckland, following visits to Solomon Islands and Kiribati.

He says for the countries of the region, climate change is not about what is happening tomorrow, but what is happening now.

"The countries of the Pacific are at the front of the frontlines of climate change and I share he region's concern and I support their calls for more concerted action. We've had very good discussions this afternoon about climate change."
