Fiji has told a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Serbia that it and other Pacific Small Island Developing States support the re-inscription of French Polynesia on the UN's decolonisation committee list.
The interim Fiji foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, spoke in Belgrade where the Non-Aligned Movement marked its 50th anniversary.
Ratu Inoke says be it in the Middle East, North Africa or in Fiji, the quest for a sustainable democracy that meets the needs of each individual country must be supported.
He has told the gathering that from next year, formal work will begin in Fiji on developing a new constitution that will provide for equal treatment of each citizen, including fundamental social and economic rights in addition to political rights.
He says for the first time in Fiji's independent history each citizen will be able to vote for the most meritorious candidate, regardless of ethnicity.
Meanwhile, the Serbian government has commended Fiji for not succumbing to international pressure on issues regarding its sovereignty.
