The Cook Islands government says the country will benefit hugely from hosting next year's Pacific Leaders Forum summit.

The Cook Islands was named as host at last week's meeting in Auckland.

The prime minister Henry Puna says it's a fantastic opportunity to promote the Cook Islands and he looks forward to welcoming leaders to the country.

Another government minister, Teariki Heather, says benefits generated from the event will trickle down into all sectors of Cook Islands society.

He says he's not sure whether the Forum will provide assistance in hosting in the same way as it helped Niue when it ran the event in 2008

Mr Heather says vehicles, furniture, food and other material specifically for the Forum had been shipped to Niue and left there for its use after the event.
