The Tonga government, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have signed a multi million dollar deal for a project delivering high speed internet to the country.

The 34 million US dollar project includes an underwater fibre optic cable connecting Tonga to the Southern Cross Cable, the main trans-Pacific link between Australia and the United States.

The establishment and operation of the 827 km submarine cable system which will run from Tonga to Fiji will provide Tonga with affordable, accessible, information and communication technology.

It's expected to bring significant economic and social benefits to the people of Tonga once in place from mid-2013.
