ILO strikes out at Fiji over new decree's implementation

9:42 am on 14 September 2011

The International Labour Organisation says Fiji's interim government shows the same lack of concern for the views of the international community as it does for the rights and aspirations of its own people.

The organisation's Director General Juan Somavia's has expressed deep regret the regime's implemented a new decree on essential national industries.

In a statement he says the interim government should change course now.

Mr Somavia says the regime's gone ahead and implemented the law despite advice by a top delegation last month to Fiji advising the decree would have a negative impact on Fiji's obligations under international labour conventions.
