International agencies to clear contaminated soil from Niue

7:20 pm on 15 September 2011

Pesticide contaminated soil is to be removed from Niue after an agreement between the Food and Agricultural Organisation and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme.

A senior officer with the FAO, Dr Kevin Helps, made the announcement during this week's 22nd annual meeting of SPREP in Apia.

Removing the contaminants is part of a larger project in the region, with assessments to be done Samoa, Fiji and Tonga.

Getting rid of the contaminated soil in Niue will show how it can be done in the other countries.

The director of the Niue Environment Department, Sauni Tongatule, says there've been some concerns over contamination of the island's water lens and that's why help has been sought to remediate some sites.
