The interim government in Fiji says it is baffled by an former government minister and unionist's appeal for asylum in Australia.
Kenneth Zinck became a minister in 2001 but lost his seat in the 2006 election - seven months before the military coup.
He says he has been repeatedly physically abused by Fiji's military.
He says his safety in Fiji can no longer be guaranteed.
But the permanent secretary for Information Sharon Smith Johns told FBC News the government has no issues with Mr Zinck.
She says there is no truth to what Mr Zinck is saying, and she says it's alarming people are fabricating these sort of stories.
