Palau has joined the United Nations' specialised marine agency.
The International Marine Organisation oversees shipping safety and security as well as the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
Palau's acceptance of the Convention on the International Maritime Organisation brings the number of member states to 170, with a further three associate members.
