The Cook Islands is eyeing the export of up to 100 tonnes of vanilla to French Polynesia every year as international demand for the spice continues to grow.

A delegation of Cook Islands agriculture industry professionals, growers and government officials recently travelled to Tahiti in an effort to better understand initiatives for product expansion.

The Cook Islands finance minister Mark Brown says the delegation received a specific request from French Polynesia to help in its production of vanilla for export.

He says demand there can't be met with current production.

The project fits with the Cook Islands government's plans to boost the country's agriculture sector.
