Papua New Guinea's acting police commissioner, Fred Yakasa, has called on villagers in the Laiagam district and other parts of Enga Province to end a spate of retaliatory killings that's left four people dead.
Mr Yakasa says these payback killings are primitive, evil in nature and must be stopped immediately.
He's called on local leaders to intervene and seek peaceful solutions before full scale tribal warfare erupts.
In the meantime the acting commissioner has deployed the police mobile squad at Porgera to Laiagam and Wabag to help local police contain the violence.
He has told the relatives of the victims the killers will face the full force of the law.
Mr Yakasa also raised concerns at the large number of firearms used in the killings and says the PNG Guns Control Summit's recommendations must be implemented without further delay.
