The French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, has called on the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, to be consistent as the French leader has spoken out in support of Palestine's bid to be recognised as a state.
The call was made in Tahiti as Mr Temaru was about to leave for New York to join United Nations discussions.
He has been lobbying for French Polynesia to be reinscribed on the UN decolonisation list - a move opposed by Paris.
Mr Temaru says a range of meetings has been planned but declined to identify the countries lending support.
He says any relisting requires a majority which he says may be easier to attain for French Polynesia than for Palestine.
