Vanuatu call for PM to take over fisheries ministry

12:06 pm on 26 September 2011

The chairman of Vanuatu Fishermen Association, Eric Puyo Festa, has asked the Prime Minister Sato Kilman to take over the Department of Fisheries amid allegations of misuse of resources.

Mr Puyo Festa said that this was unanimously agreed during the meeting of the association last week at the headquarters of the Malfatumauri National Council of Chiefs.

He says as Mr Kilman has recently taken over Air Vanuatu from the Minister of Public Utilities Harry Iauko and the Police Force from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Georges Wells, he can also apply same decision to the Department of Fishery.

Mr Puyo Festa says it seems the department is no longer in control of what is happening.

Recently the Minister of Fisheries, James Nwango, ordered an investigation into alleged fraud.

Mr Puyo Festa says he has also received information of allegations that staff from the department have used government facilities for personal interests.
