Challenge to election of PNG prime minister O'Neill back in court today

4:02 pm on 26 September 2011

The special Supreme Court reference challenging the 2nd of August election of Peter O'Neil as prime minister returns to the High Court today.

NBC reports that the return of the reference is for the court to check if orders made early this month have been complied with by the parties, before hearings can start.

Among the court's directions are that the referrer, the East Sepik Provincial Government, make available to it all medical reports and records of Sir Michael Somare.

The court also directed that the provincial government prove that it has the authority of its executive council to bring the reference to court.

It comes after a failed bid by Sir Michael to stop the speaker from disqualifying him from his parliamentary seat, the inclusion of 29 extra questions raised by attorney general Dr Allan Marat and a bid by Sir Michael to add his name to the action.
