Serious crime involving young people worrying authorities in American Samoa

American Samoa police have raised concerns at the rising number of crimes involving young people.

An adult and two teenagers are alleged to have held up a shop worker at gunpoint Thursday night in Ottoville.

The trio were later identified by nearby residents and arrested two hours after the robbery occurred.

The adult, 20-year-old Asotasi Maiava, and two men aged 14 and 17, appeared in court on Friday.

Mr Maiava has been charged with disturbing the peace but other charges are likely to filed this week.

The 14-year-old was charged with first degree robbery and disturbing the peace while the older juvenile faces a peace disturbance charge but police say they might prosecute him as an adult due to the seriousness of the crime.
