Food shortage in north Tonga

1:26 pm on 29 September 2011

There are reports from Tonga that the people of the northern island of Niuafo'ou are facing a shortage of food and other goods.

Radio Tonga reports the Catholic parish priest in Niuafo'ou, Father Pauli Ta'ai, as saying food supplies are diminishing by the day.

He says the island is heavily dependent on inter island shipping but visits are irregular.

Father Ta'ai says the lack of food and supplies is affecting schools, businesses and families' basic needs.
