The Papua New Guinea NGO, Act Now, has welcomed signs from the government that InterOil's proposed Liquified Natural Gas project in Gulf province needs to be revised.
The Minister of Petroleum and Energy, William Duma, says InterOil's plans for the project have deviated from its original proposal which the government agreed to in 2009.
InterOil has responded, insisting it fully intends delivering the world class LNG Project it signed up to.
Act Now's Effrey Dademo says numerous issues such as landowner agreements need addressing before the development can proceed.
She says it's not just this LNG project.
"There are other projects. There's fisheries and timber projects in the countries. It's obvious that operators have deviated from original proposals. The government scrutiny in that area is very, very minimal. It's because of the fact that the LNG project is a world class project, the focus of the government is on that. But they should also be doing that across the board."
