2:36 pm on 30 September 2011

Tonga's third military contingent to serve in Afghanistan will leave for Britain tomorrow.

Matangi Tonga reports that the troops will fly via Auckland where they will meet the Tongan Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano.

Lieutenant Commander Solomone Savelio says the contingent consists of 55 soldiers who will spend eight weeks in pre-deployment training before their transfer to Afghanistan.

The soldiers will be deployed for six months and work at Helmand Province in Southern Afghanistan.

Tonga's first contingent of 55 soldiers departed Tonga last October and the second contingent is expected to return to Tonga in December.
